Investigations math

I interviewed a teacher in an elementary school about investigations math. I first asked him how did it affect his class. He said, "that as a whole it hurt the class." His students math scores went down. I asked him if it was good for any body. He replied, "that it did help a select few." I was a good way for some students to develop skills in math. The problem was how the district implemented it to the classroom. He felt like a lot of the teachers were not ready to teach it. They were apposed to the change. So it was met with a lot of opposition. The teacher that i interviewed was for the change but said that the pendulum swung to far. They didn't need to change the complete model of instruction. It would have been best to change some of the instruction and Incorporated it with the existing model of instruction.
The second area that hurt the change was how they implemented it in the district. The parents were up in arms. they didn't know what the teacher was teaching and how to help their kids. They needed to present the information to the parents. it was mass confusion on all levels.
The teacher said that he is able to incorporate both models of instruction in his classroom and that he is receiving the highest test scores in math then he has ever seen.
It looks like investigations math was a better fit for some teachers then others. As i read through article and article on the topic I felt like the numbers supported both sides of the argument. I personally think that it is up to the teacher to have the responsibility to teach how their students learn best. That's why we are taught all these different models of instruction because we all learn differently.

Final Blog

What?
I received a very close score on all three areas. I was a point or two higher in humanism and cognitive development than behaviorism. I think that all have areas that are important to the learning process. I think that kids learn best when are able to apply what they learn. If they can repeat the skill or knowledge learned then they will be able to recall and apply it to life. One of the main reasons that I went in to business education is because they students will us the skills taught in my classes in their life. The business department teaches skills that students will learn. I want to present the students will effective modeling. I want them to be able to set goals and achieve them. I want to be the teacher that directs the students learning ant not just an information repeater. i also believe in creating a learning atmosphere. I want the students to feel comfortable in my classroom. I want it to be a place where they can think and express themselves without worry or ridicule. It only takes one bad experience to hurt the learning process for ever.
So what?
I think that these theory will impact my classroom very positively. I think that students will be able to learn and express themselves. It will be a very interactive environment. Student will have a very good hands on educational learning. I want them to master skills and knowledge. I will have a very upbeat classroom. I don't ever want a boring classroom. If the students are board then i know that i will be board. I will work very hard to create this classroom.
Now what?
I want to learn more about assessment and behaviorism. The reason that I want to learn more about assessment is to be able to teach my students the proper way that they can evaluate their own learning. I have learned a lot about assessment but i haven't been able to apply it to the classroom. This i will be able to do when I student teach and have a job. I think that I lack the hands on experience. This can only come through teaching in the classroom. I can't wait.
I also want to learn more about behaviorism. I want to encourage my students to succeed in the classroom. I want to make sure that i give the student the proper encouragement. I don't want my positive reinforcement to be generic. I want it to be tailored to the individual. So i want to learn how to assess the proper reinforcement and apply that to their behavior. I know that i will learn a lot through my student teaching experience. I always want to be open to criticism and change as a teacher. I think that this is important to becoming a excellent teacher.

Social Cognitivism ch 10

What?
I found today's lesson very interesting. I likes the topics of reinforcement that we covered. I like talking about the environment that we want to create in the classroom. I like the concept of modeling. I like the points that are brought up in the book about modeling. It say, "students are better readers if their parents read at home." It also talks about how athletic skills are mastered if shown techniques and skills. This all plays in to academic skills. If we present positive academic modeling our students will master academic skills. I also liked the part on student self-efficacy. We need to help students make noticeable progress on complex skills. I also think that it is important have students see successful peer models. This will also encourage the behavior you want of the students.
So what?
So how does this apply to my classroom? The book gave excellent examples of how to incorporate this in to the classroom. I think that it is important to describe the behavior that you are reinforcing. This can some times be confusing for students. If you like how they stayed on task then tell them that you are proud of them for staying on task. I they don't know what behavior to model how can they model it. i also think that we need to help students believe that they can achieve the incentives in the classroom. I think that it is also important tell the students what behaviors are unacceptable in the classroom.
Now what?
It is so important that we incorporate these principles in the classroom. To help students accomplish these goals we need to help them with self-regulation. I want to help my students to set challenging yet realistic goals and standards. I want the students to see their progress and fill the excitement of success. I know that students can be their worst critic. I what students to critique their performance but i want it to bee constructive. I want them to have a good attitude and the skills to properly critique themselves. It should be a positive experience. I think that these strategies will help them reinforce appropriate behaviors.

Behaviorism

What?
It was interesting to complete the activity in class in deciding the differences between the behaviors of the students. I have never taken an approach toward behaviorism like that. I found it helpful to break it down and analyze the different cases. As i read over the chapter and prepaid my study guide i found it a bit confusing to follow. But class really cleared my concerns up and made it easier to understand what the chapter was trying to teach us. The overall ideas that i got from this chapter was how to conduct ourselves with behavior problems and how to help the students with the when having a behavior problem. I also feel like this ties all in to the big picture of how behavior affects the learning process. I like how we went over the proper reinforcers in class. I can see how damaging that can be to a students education if the motivation is directed toward the wrong outcome. I like how we talked about monetary system that are used in the classroom. We need to ask ourselves what is the overall purpose and is it the best way to achieve that goal.
So what?
When dealing with behaviorism in the classroom I feel it is important to ask certain questions like, So why is it important to know how to give the proper reinforcement in our classrooms? How do we approach a behavior problem? What is the proper way to assess a behavior problem? and how do we manage our classrooms so that it promotes a proper intrinsic reward for the student? I think that all of these are proper question to ask when we are teaching. I think that the best way to accomplish these task are through proper classroom management. Through classroom management we will be able to provide a proper learning atmosphere for our students.
Now what?
I think that the best way to have good classroom management is making sure that your lessons don't contradict your classroom management. Incorporate classroom management into your lesson so that behavior problems will not occur. And if they do occur which they will address them and move on. I think that the proper reinforcers need to be given. What is the purpose of the reinforcer and how will it benefit the students learning. We need to motivate our students and give them the proper encouragement so that they will succeed.

Constructivism

What?
As I think about the class on constructivism I got the over all feeling of how to organize the information so that the students will be able to arrive to the conclusion with guided instruction. I found it interesting how we talked about students construction knowledge and using the construction process to complete a task. I thought that Laura, Kyla, and Jakob gave a great example of how to use knowledge construction as a teaching strategie. Knowledge construction entails so many strategies like: opportunities for experimentation, expert perspectives, conceptual understanding, classroom dialogue, authentic activities, theor construction, and creating a community of learners.
So what?
I think for me, I need to take this in consideration when writing my lesson plans. Take the time to write the lesson with constructivism in mind. I need to ask myself these questions, does this lesson have construction teaching strategies? Will the students be able to link future lesson to the concepts in this lesson? Is it giving the students the proper information so that they will be able to construct proper theories and outcomes? I think that the information needs to be in an organized fashion so that the students can construct knowledge.
Now what?
Now that I know what needs to go into my lessons so that I am providing a constructivism environment, I need to assess that the students are constructing the proper knowledge. I think that the hardest part of constructivism is it is hard for students to change. If they have a belief and it is false it is hard to over come and accept. one false belief could lead to many false beliefs. Again that is why proper assessment needs to be applied at all time.

Cognitive Psychology

What?
If you were to ask me what cognitive psychology means i could give you the definition that says, "theoretical perspective focusing on the specific ways in which learners mentally think about new information and events." But as we discussed in class it is much much more than a simple definition. We talked about sensory registry, short term memory, long term memory and how it is all linked together. I thought it was interesting how you were teaching us cognitive psychology by using cognitive psychology. The role play and the visual imagery when we made a line and were the actual process. It made the concept a little more easy to understand. This is what teaching is all about, getting the students to learn new information and to retain it. That is why we learn all the different models of instruction.
So what?
So what am I going to do with this information? use it! All the models of instruction that I have learned will be applied in the classroom. I think that time spent on writing lesson plans will show the quality of teaching in the classroom. I think that too many teachers get stuck in a rut and just plan on teaching the same way everyday. I always need to be whiling to change and develop good teaching skills. I think the teachers need to be humble in teaching and realize that they can always do better. Always be whiling to learn new models of instruction and apply them into your lessons.
Now what?
How will I make sure that cognitive learning is happening in the classroom is through proper assessment. This can not be stressed enough. I want to make sure that the students are learning the information. And not only learning it but are applying it and building upon it for new concepts. I need to make sure the foundation is right so that it is easier to connect the information learned to the information that is going to be learned. The student in my class need to have the positive experiences in order to embrace the information that needs to be learned. As I reflect upon the things that I learned in high school I can remember the information that had an enjoyable experience with it. That is the kind of learning atmosphere that I want to create in my classroom.

Moral and Social Development

What?
After studying the mental development of our students, it is interesting to compare the those stages of development with the social and moral development stages that we learned this week. it is just as crucial to know the moral and social needs of our students to help them succeed. We discussed in class kohlberg's stages of moral development. I found it interesting the different stages that the students go through. I also find it interesting how the students in the same class can be on those different levels. I also found it interesting how we talked about the characteristics of social and moral development that could possible hinder a student from learning. We also talked about Erikson's model of psychosocial development. And how at each stage a student will be presented with a developmental task, and how teh student addresses it will influence the overall development.
So what?
As I think back to my high school years and remember the different cliques and groups that students hung out in. I can see how this might have been detrimental to their learning. A student needs to have a good self esteem and be self confident to have a great success in high school. It might be true that some student just go through the motions of high school getting passing grades. But this does nothing to prepare them for life after high school.
Now what?
Students need to feel socially accepted in our classrooms. I think that one of the biggest barriers in our classrooms are the lines that exist between cliques. So to encourage students to cross these lines I will make sure that everyone has time to present their ideas and belief. Promote activities that allow students to express themselves. Classroom debates are a good way to make the students think and observe moral dilemmas. Give the students activities that explore their moral reasoning. It will also help them develop social skills. This would be a great way to develop morally and socially.

Cognitive Development ch 2

What?
Today’s class was filled with so much information. This one chapter could be a whole semester class. I liked learning about the different functions of the brain. I like how we pared up to study about our specific part of the brain than shared it with the class. I will always remember what the brain stem does. The second part of class was filled with a ton of information about Piaget and Vygotsky. We also talked about having our students in the right zone of proximal development.
So What?
So why is it important to know how the brain works? To better understand our students and how they learn. It is crucial to know the process of how information is received, stored, and retrieved. I think that it is amazing how much we know about the brain and its functions. It is interesting to know how our students will develop and learn. I realize that there are different theories of cognitive development. But it is important that we use these theories to make sure that our students are in their zone of proximal development.
Know What?
As a future teacher I think that it is important that proper assessment be given in my lessons. This is the way that I will make sure that my students are in their ZPD. We need to make sure that during the student’s development they are receiving the proper information so that the events happening in their lives can be built upon. They need to be processing proper and correct information so that the future learning of the child will be strengthened. We need to use this information as teachers. We need to incorporate it into our lessons and our assessment. We need to constantly reflect upon each student and make sure they are in their ZPD.

Individual Differences Ch 5

What?
I found the class on individual differences very interesting. I liked the part were we took the intelligence test. It was interesting to see the different learning styles of our class. I also found it interesting to talk about the different learning theories. I would say that I end to lean toward Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences. I feel that intelligences are talents. We all have different talents. We also know we can develop talents and make them better.
So What?
As teachers we have to recognize that our students learn differently. We must make sure that their learning styles are met. We need to write lesson plans that will incorporate the students learning style. I think that more then ever before pressure is put on the teacher to make sure the student is learning. I am not saying that it is wrong for teachers to be under pressure, but if every student needs to succeed, than we have to make sure their learning style is met. We must first recognize the learning styles of our class than adapt the lesson to their needs.
Now What?
I want to be the best I can be. I want to give my students the best opportunity to learn and progress. I need to be aware of their learning styles. I need to write lesson plans that will help them understand the objectives of the lessons. It is great to learn about how and why students learn. If we didn't learn this then teaching would be very difficult and unrewarding.

Group Differences Ch 4

What?
I thought that this weeks class was very interesting on cultures and group differences. I feel like it is such an important topic when it comes to teaching. I learned this week that there are many different cultures that I will be faced with in school. I thought that it was interesting to learn about worldviews and stereotypes. This class went right along with my multicultural class. I like the many ideas that were shared about making a classroom a multicultural environment. I also thought it was interesting the statistics that you shared with us in class.
So What?
So why is this important to know? If we are not of the cultures that our students are in how can we best serve them. We need to make sure that each student is receiving all the resources available to them. If we don't know where the student is coming from how can we help them. We also need to know the proper way to teach a student. If we have mannerisms that offend student, or say something that might offend students, we need to correct and change what we do and say.
I also think that it is important to create a multicultural classroom. I like the many ideas that were shared in class. We need to make sure that everyone feels included. I we truly believe that school is for everyone then lets make sure that we teach it to everyone.
Now What?
As I look back at the lesson plans that I have written I realize that they have not been very good at creating a multicultural classroom. I know that I need to work on this. I must say that none of this stuff dawned on me till just recently. I wish that I had learned this before I had written all my lesson plans. How ever i am glad that I have learned it before I start teaching.

Research Article

Title-The Effect of Early vs Delayed Start Times of Classes on Grades of High School Students
Found-tcrecord.org
Bibli-Karn Tarnow
The article talked about how high school students that had a class earlier in the morning vs. students that had the same class in the afternoon did better or worse. The research that was conducted was correlation research. They found that the students who took the class in the afternoon had a higher grade in the class. They looked at over 61000 students to conduct this study. The one problem that I see with this research is their was no cause and effect. Their are a lot of variables that could play in this situation. How ever they did look at a large amount of students in this study. I found the article very interesting however it would be fun to conduct some experimental research in this study. This article made me think about this class. I hope that because it is an early class I get a good grade.
Learning Log 9/15
I learned the difference between what kind of research could be done in the class room. It was interesting to see the differences and correlation between all the studies. I liked the way we talked about the strengths and weaknesses of the difference studies. It also made me think about the kind of studies that I would want to conduct in my classroom. I feel that it is important to conduct the different studies in our classrooms the help the students learn. I learned that not all studies may be perfect to implement in the classroom. That is why it is important to conduct your own studies. And not just any studies but the right studies.

Motivation

I am here because I love teaching. I like making a difference and influencing people. It is a career that I can do every day and love it.

I am motivated by goals and results.

I succeed because of the hard work and the effort i put into a gaol.

I fail because of the lack of effort I put into a goal.

I am on my way to graduating the program. So I don't have to change my motivation.
